My role as a divorce coach is to provide support, knowledge and skills to facilitate resolution of conflicts and barriers to reach an agreement that: maximally acknowledges and addresses the needs of all parties, and minimizes the trauma that can be experienced in sudden and all encompassing changes. By addressing the emotional experiences and perspectives of each partner and the dynamics of the relationship I work with the goal of achieving a plan that not only supports the transition stages of divorce, but enhances the interpersonal learning and growth of all the parties involved. These goals extend to maximize the lifestyle, quality of family relationships and functioning post-divorce. The communication, negotiation and conflict resolution skills that can be learned through the collaborative process will continue to reap benefits as families face ongoing developmental challenges in the future years, especially through the stages of development of the children involved.
I see my role of child specialist as being in the arena closest to everyone’s heart, therefore often the most challenging. I carry over thirty-three years experience of working with children and families in multiple modalities and settings as I strive to bring the voice and needs of children to the table. The process of looking at their experiences, needs and perspectives often brings the information from which stalemates are broken and wisdom gained in the larger collaborative team setting. The knowledge, skills and experience in children’s development and mental health issues that I offer provides the ability to address the needs of the most important participants in the process of divorce. The design, implementation and revision on an ongoing basis of co-parenting plans is an integral part of the task of the collaborative team.
