Nancy Johnson is a lawyer and mediator practising exclusively in the area of family law.
Nancy is a strong advocate of the collaborative process. She was a founding member of the Okanagan Collaborative Family Law Group, and was its Co-chair from 2000 to 2004. In 2009, Nancy agreed to act as Chair of the group again, and is its current chair. Nancy believes that this approach to the resolution of family matters will help to reduce the emotional and financial costs of separation for her clients.
Nancy graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School (Toronto) in 1990 and then articled and worked with a major Toronto law firm before relocating to the Okanagan in 1995. Nancy lived in the Okanagan as a child, and was lured back here by her husband who grew up in the Okanagan.
Nancy has extensive courtroom experience having acted as Counsel for the Ministry of Human Resources in their Family Maintenance Program for over seven years. This work involved obtaining spousal and child support for recipients of income assistance. As a result, Nancy has developed a very solid expertise in child and spousal support matters. Nancy's goal, however, is to shield her family law clients from the expense and uncertainty of court whenever possible.
Nancy understands that family law matters are generally very stressful and difficult for clients for many reasons. She supports her clients by explaining the various dispute resolution options and the law to them in easy to understand terms, and by ensuring that her clients understand the cost/benefit implications of their decisions.
Nancy is a Certified Family Mediator. She is a past Chair of the Canadian Bar Association's Okanagan Alternative Dispute Resolution Subsection, and a past Chair of the Canadian Bar Association's Okanagan Family Law Subsection.
Nancy also assists her fellow members of the legal profession as a Family Law Practice Advisor for the Canadian Bar Association, and as a reviewer of the Law Society's Practice Checklists Manual for the Family Practice Interview.
Nancy has also taken an active role in the local community. She was President of the Board of Directors of Okanagan Families Society (now known as The Bridge) from 1997 to 2004 and is a former director of the Kelowna Art Gallery.
When she is not working, Nancy can be found skiing at Big White, catching up on the next selection for her book club, entertaining friends, doing arts and crafts and enjoying the beautiful Okanagan.
