I have been a lawyer since 1994. I articled in Kelowna and have practised in Kelowna since then. I have a general knowledge of many areas of the law and for the past 10 years, my practice has been almost exclusively in family law, including divorce, custody and access, child support, spousal support and property division.
I am a member of the Canadian Bar Association Family Law Subsection and past president of the Kelowna Bar Association.
I do have extensive courtroom experience as some issues do need resolution through the court system. However, as long as both parties deal fairly and honestly with each other, my experience has shown that the majority of family law matters can be worked out amicably without the need for court, with the assistance of skilled legal counsel and sometimes other professionals. Alternate methods to court include mediation, informal meetings, negotiations between lawyers and the collaborative law process.
Marriage or relationship breakdown is likely the most stressful single event that an individual may experience. I have first had experience in being involved in the wide variety of ways in which parties choose to resolve the issues arising from the breakdown of their relationship. The most positive experience is one that maintains integrity, respect and the ability to continue to co-parent children after the relationship ends. As a parent myself, I am sensitive to the needs of children and look for solutions that will have the least amount of negative impact on the children.
In my practice, I always look first to the least adversarial method to help parties resolve their dispute. Collaborative Family Law is one of those methods and I am excited to have become a member of the Okanagan Collaborative Family Law Group.
